Abelton Live is great for The freebie PT is very limited. If you are running a commercial studio with an unlimited budget and a supercomputer, the full-on PT is great. As far as automation goes, everything is up for grabs. This is Ableton's strong suit. Protools is king for audio mixing. If you're doing electronic music production, I'd go with Ableton. If you're mainly just recording instruments and mixing them, go Pro Tools. If you need to record and mix or have any workflow or algorithms from this century, I'd stay away from pro Tools. If you need to hand turnkeys to students from recording "schools", then definitely get Pro Tools.

You should also check out Tracktion Waveform - they have a fully featured free version. All the other big DAWs have free demos. You should check out a few and some will stand out as easier and more intuitive to you. They all have pretty much the same core functionality, so there aren't many features that you can only get in one DAW. Depending on what kind of recording you're doing, you will probably wind up wanting to get the full version of whatever you wind up with, so factor that in.
Some of these are not cheap to go all in. I'm currently using Studio One and am very happy with it. I have a Focusrite with free Ableton and I haven't even downloaded it yet because Pro Tools is what I know and works for my needs. I tried Reaper in between and found it not intuitive, at least compared to how I was used to working.
